Self Portrait - Acrylic Paint |
Assignment Overview: For this project we had to take a picture that had emotion and make a self-portrait in acrylic with it.
References: I chose to do an upside down portrait where I was smiling in the sun. I combined the two pictures for my final drawing Color Sketch: This was done in colored pencil |
Progress photos: First I made a grid drawing so I could get the proportions right. Then I started painting some of the darkest and lightest areas as I gradually started adding more color. I should have stuck to one picture but it turned out fine. I ended up redoing the hair and eyebrows because I was not satisfied with it. I think I did well when painting the shadows on my face but I think I could have made the lips and nose more detailed/proportional. I also think I could have added more shadows to the jacket. For the background I used a palette knife to apply it to create some texture. I learned how to mix colors and apply them. I learned how to paint teeth better. I grew as an artist by learning how to make a self-portrait in acrylic.

OIL PAINTING PRACTICE:
Pallet Knife/Brush Oil Landscape Painting
Work in Progress ^
FINAL:
Progress photos: First I measured the proportions of the original picture and then transferred them to my canvas. Then I started painting the sky gradient and then added white for the clouds and sun. I used a brush for the sky with some pallet knife elements. I had to redo some of the clouds and sun because the some of the blue from the background was coming in, and the paint wasn't blending well. I then moved on to the ocean where I started with the darkest parts, using prussian blue. Then I filled in the rest of the lighter spaces. Then I started dragging paint with my pallet knife to create texture and unevenness. Once I was finished with that, I went back in with the knife and added the white highlights. By doing this painting I learned how to use a pallet knife and make a landscape painting.. I grew as an artist by learning how to make a landscape painting in oil paint. |
