Art 4:
FInal Reflection
At the beginning of the year, I was unexperienced in materials other than acrylics and pencil. So when I started the first project (reflection colored pencil), I was hesitant because colored pencil was not a medium I used a lot. But the more I did the practice drawing of the spheres and cylinders and the color values/charts, I became more confident. When I started the project, I overestimated the amount of work that would be put into it due to the amount of layers necessary. I tried to be neat as possible but ended up redoing a lot of areas, and I tried by best to match the colors as close as possible to the reference picture. For not having done a large scale colored pencil drawing since 8th grade, I believe that my drawing shows skill. Then the next project was about interior spaces in acrylic. This project was not hard for me because I mainly use acrylics to paint. While the process went smoothly, I lacked in finishing minor details and painting dimensional teeth. I am satisfied with that project and I believe it shows my skill to capture photo-realism. The next project was a self-portrait in acrylic. This was also not hard because I had done an acrylic portrait before. I had some difficulty painting highlights and hair but otherwise the process went smoothly. I also improved on painting teeth due to my previous experience. The final project was an oil painting landscape. This was difficult because oil paint was not a medium I had ever practiced with. Also for the project, I chose to use a pallet knife to paint. But since I did a practice drawing of an apple before, I was used to the techniques. It was hard capturing the sky of the painting and making everything blend together. My major weakness is that I do not use a lot of paint when I am mixing, so I am not able to cover enough canvas and blend. I typically blend on the canvas instead of making transitional shades which is not good. I do believe I captured the roughness of the waves well, but not the sky. In all I learned to use new materials and practice with them so I could become familiar with them. I learned that I should use more paint and make transitional shades instead of blending on the canvas to make everything smooth. I should be more patient and not paint just what I see, but add other colors to make the image look different. I believe I improved my skill throughout this course.
