Ap ART
Piece 1:
Size: 8x10
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
I chose a material that I am the most familiar with. This relates to the idea present in the work because I have re-pierced by ear multiple times and I am familiar/comfortable with doing that. Since this idea of body modification is "basic", I have chosen a basic medium. By doing a realistic painting I am presenting the idea at face value
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose of this work of art is to show the idea of "body modification" at a basic face value. Since I want to show a progression of ideas, this one is very basic and only shows my skill.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
Practice and revision led me to achieve a very realistic painting of an ear. I was able to understand how to draw the anatomy of an ear and capture the shadows and shapes within.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
First, I started with a few sketch drawings so I could get an idea of how I would position the ear. Then I took a reference photo, primed my canvas with a red acrylic wash and then did a grid drawing. After that I started painting the darkest areas of the picture such as the hair and shadows. I then continued with the rest of the painting, doing the needle and highlights last.

Piece 2:
Size: 8x10
Medium: Acrylic Paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
This piece has a similar investigation as as #1. I chose a material that I am the most familiar with. This relates to the idea present in the work because I have popped countless pimples. Since this idea of body modification is "basic", I have chosen a basic medium. By doing a realistic painting I am presenting the idea at face value.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose of this work of art is to show the idea of "body modification" at a basic face value. Since I want to show a progression of ideas, this one is very basic and only shows my skill. But I also tried to express the feeling of dissatisfaction over pimples which are not generally beautiful.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
Practice and revision led me to achieve a very realistic painting of my face. I was able to understand how to paint eyes and frown lines while also exaggerating the lines.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
First, I started with a few sketch drawings so I could get an idea of how I would position myself Then I took a reference photo, primed my canvas with a red acrylic wash and then did a grid drawing. After that I started painting the darkest areas of the picture such as the hair and shadows. I then continued with the rest of the painting, doing the pimple and eye highlights last.

Piece 3:
Size: 14x20
Medium: Graphite pencil and Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
I used a graphite pencil because the outcome of the picture would be black and white. By using acrylic paint I was able to provide a contrast in the piece and highlight the artificial, alien element. The red paint has a double meaning depending on the viewers interpretation. It could represent impulsiveness, which reflects my personal decision to cut my own hair or courage of the act. This piece contrasts (insert piece once done). There is an allusion that the viewer is the one cutting the hair.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The meaning of the work was to represent body modification, but in a more symbolic and personal way. It was meant to raise the questions and thoughts behind impulsiveness with cutting hair. This usually signifies a change in the individual and I wanted to express the "act of" in the piece.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
By practicing, I was able to come up with the idea of a red pair of scissors and the format of the piece. Instead of choosing a photograph that provided no dynamic angles, this piece reflects by revision by having the illusion that the viewer is the one cutting the hair.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I started by taking a reference photograph. I then did a grid drawing to transfer the image to the paper. I then started outlining the image and shading major areas like the chest. I then continued into the skin and did the hair last As I did not want to smudge the piece. I did the scissors last with red acrylic paint.

Piece 4: A Surgeon's Dream
Size: 10x4
Medium: photography and digital art
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
Photography equals real, digital drawings/editing equal fake. This contrasts relates to the idea behind my work b/c it is compared to the idea of plastic surgery being plastic, not real.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The meaning of this work is the idea of body modification expressed in the form of plastic surgery. It is represented by the plastic barbie doll being positioned in a contrapposto form. The contrapposto form was an art form used by the greeks/romans to create balance and realness in their sculptures. By positioning the doll in that pose, it is conveyed that the surgeons wants to make the plastic real. The surgical hands in the background represent the surgeons dream of creating realness out of plastic.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I was able to find the best representation of my idea by continually positioning the characters and redrawing them. I changed the ideas of it as I originally intended for their to be three barbie dolls with surgical lines drawn on them.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
First I took a picture of the barbie dolls in different positions with the light reflected off of them. I then transferred those to my drawing app and cut them out. I then took a picture of a glove, cropped it out and put in the app. I then adjusted the colors, making them more bright and vivid. I did the same for the doll, matching it to the background. After that I repositioned the arms and legs of the doll and redrew the connecting pieces. I also erased the joints of the doll, making it seem more human. I then added the white text.

Piece 5:
Size: 17.5 x 24 in
Medium: Charcoal Pencil and Acrylic
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
The charcoal pencil provides a contrast with the acrylic paint. The blue tweezer represents a tear/sadness, while the rest of the red tweezers represents anger over the task of pulling out hair. Since my idea is body modification, the removal of facial hair, a natural thing, relates to this.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose of this art is to express the societal pressure of removing facial hair, especially in colored people. It is also a personal connection to my experience as a south asian. I have gone under the pressure of shaving/tweezing/waxing my face. This piece represents my personal experience of body modification.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
At first my drawing was not very smooth, and some of the angles were off. I kept smoothing out lines and darkening up areas like my hair. In my progress photos you can the shift of the face. This made the outcome photo a lot more put together.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I took a reference picture and did a grid drawing. I first did the line work. I then did the eyes and used the leftover charcoal residue to do the rest of the face. I continued adding more values and smoothing out the face. I redid the hair twice because the values were not dark enough. At the end I drew in the swirlies around the face to cover up the white background and added in the tweezers.

Piece 6: Hangnail
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
I used very cheap, not deeply pigmented acrylic paint. This created the pink, warm, childlike colors. Since the colors were not that dark it created a light mood/effect. However the image depicted in the painting is not nice. I did a deep red color to draw the blood area as a contrast. This creates the idea of appearances are not what they seem.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose is to show another idea of body modification, but this time in self-harm. It is a form of self harm tied with a thing many people do to themselves, except exaggerated. It also represents an intrusive thought.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I was able to put the right colors in the right spots.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I took a reference photo, altered it, did a grid drawing. then I blocked in most of the background. After that I started mixing my colors to find the skin tone color and started applying it. From there I went more colorful, not use black at all.

Piece 7:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
Similar type of color scheme as piece 6, the pink colorful skin distracts the viewer from the main action. I used a dark background to bring the leg into focus.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
It has a similar idea to piece 6, but this one also represents reflection of a body image, as in the subject does not wan't leg hair that they keep on continuously shaving down to their skin. A personal intrusive thought is present as I have wondered what would happen if I applied pressure when shaving.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I tried using different colors in the hands, but it was not as cohesive as I thought it would be. I also used a light background when using purple shadows, so I changed the background to a dark purple to let the subject pop. I think that improved my piece by a lot.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
Started with a grid drawing to get proportions right. Started painting the darkest colors with purple and brown. I then moved on to the hands and tried putting different colors to achieve depth. Then I moved on to the lightest parts of the skin and added the torn up skin. Then I did the razor and revised the background.

Piece 8:
Size: 18x12 in.
Medium: Gouache paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
This was my first time using gouache and I wanted to make a watercolor effect when painting. Since gouache is usually light, this makes the whole image light and not overbearing. The colors are light enough to highlight extreme colors, like the red blood.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose of this work is similar to piece 6 except this is an action that I have actually done. The unrealistic part is the blood pooling out and the bugs coming out. That is why the piece still has unrealistic colors.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
Through revision, I was able to come up with more features for the background of the hands to draw the viewer in. The bugs and blood made the background less plain and added more to the piece so it wouldn't be boring. I opted out of including the rest of the arm for one hand because it looks more cohesive when it disappeared behind the scratching hand.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I started with a grid drawing to get the proportions right and then started with the darkest areas with dark brown and black. I then when with filling the lines and adding blue for shadows. I used red to the palms of the hands and the lighter areas for more dimensions. When I filled in the skin I started with the scratches and added bugs and blood.

Piece 9:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
I chose a material that I am the most familiar with. This relates to the idea present in the work because I have picked my nose a lot. Since this idea of body modification is "basic", I have chosen a basic medium. By doing a realistic painting I am presenting the idea at face value. The unrealistic element of the color is represented in the nose bleed since I have never gotten one.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
To present a common action that everyone does, but it is unrealistic in that the nose is bleeding since that has never happened. The idea of body modification is still present here.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I was able to change some of the colors to a more pink tone and make the lips bigger. I was able to darken up the background to make the final more contrasting.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
Started with a grid drawing to get proportions right and then started with the darkest areas like the nostril. I then blocked in most of the skin and used blue to act as a shadow. I then moved on to the lips and hand. At the end I added the blood.

Piece 10:
Size: 8x10 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
This piece has a similar investigation as as #1. I chose a material that I am the most familiar with. This relates to the idea present in the work because I have clipped my nails a lot. Since this idea of body modification is "basic", I have chosen a basic medium. By doing a realistic painting I am presenting the idea at face value.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
To represent body modification at a very basic level, clipping toenails. This just shows skill, it is similar to piece 1 and 2.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I was able to achieve more blockly brushstrokes and did not really go too far into realisticness due to time constraints. I was able to capture the shadows of the foot well.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
Started with a grid drawing and then filled in the darkest areas. Then did the clipper. Then moved to different values. I did the fingernails and hand last. Then I filled in the background, I wish I had added more to the background though.

Piece 11:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
The combination of the blue and orangish skin tone made the skin look unhealthy as if I was actually sick. I used oil paint to get a more looser feeling when painting.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose was to convey the inner irritation of allergies and the changes it made to my body. You can see the bloodshot eyes and rubbing of my eyes due to allergies. It is supposed to show me personally irritating my body.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I kept trying to add more lighter values to give a more 3-D feel. I achieved that in the nose but I feel like I could have added more to the sides of the face. The hair was redone multiple times because it appeared flat and too short.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I started with a grid drawing and then started painting the darkest areas first. i then added to the skin color and then moved on to the shirt. I did the background last. I alternated between the hair and the skin, trying to get a more 3D feel.

Piece 12:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
The plain acrylic to get a super realistic painting is similar to piece 1. Since this idea of body modification is "basic", I have chosen a basic medium. By doing a realistic painting I am presenting the idea at face value
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
I was trying to express someone cracking their lips on purpose. Since this is a real act, the image is super realistic to reflect that. Body modification is present as I am changing the state of my lips.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product? 4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I printed out my image and then started using the grid technique to make sure the sketch on my paper matched with the picture. Once I did that I put a red wash on the canvas. I first started with the darkest areas on the picture which were the mouth shadows. I then alternated to the skin. Then I moved onto the lips. During this process I would repeatedly switch between doing the inside of the mouth to making other painted parts look better. I had redo several parts like the lips because I wasn't satisfied with the texture. Once I had filled out the whole piece, I used white paint to outline to highlight the lights reflecting.

I had redo several parts like the lips because I wasn't satisfied with the texture. Once I had filled out the whole piece, I used white paint to outline to highlight the lights reflecting.
Piece 13:
Size: 16x12 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
Similar to piece 6, I wanted to use unrealistic colors to convey the unrealisticness of this piece. The gouache paint creates vibrant colors for that purpose. The colors and background distract the viewer from the main action.
I ended up changing the background multiple times to match the hand color. I probably should have filled the rest of the empty space in though. I worked on darkening some areas and making the fruits more vibrant.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I started sketching the hands and banana and then I colored them in. Then I did the other fruit placing them wherever. I then colored those in. I did the background last.

Piece 14:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
Photography for realisticness, a real thought is represented in this piece. The photography shows good lighting and contrast. I tried to use dark colors to define the subject.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose is to show a person who is trying to modify their skin tone. This relates to India's colorism and people trying to become fairer. A popular brand that promoted this is present in the image as Fair and Lovely. This shows body modification and desperation.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product?
I worked on a finding a good angle to show how the subject is converging onto the mirror and find good props for the white cream (lotion). I used a photo editor to edit out the bedsheet in the background and add words.
4) Describe your process when creating this work.
I made my mom angle the picture the way I wanted it to. I tried to set up the scene to have lighting from one side to highlight my face and create shadows. I then put a bunch of lotion on my face.

Piece 14:
Size: 11x14 in.
Medium: Acrylic paint
1)Describe your investigation of materials? How do the materials you chose relate to or
effectively communicate the idea behind your work?
I used acrylic to get very realistic and create bright vivid colors. Acrylic is for realism. The plastic represents plastic surgery and "ruins" the piece.
2)Identify the purpose, meaning, or overarching idea of the work of art.
The purpose is to show inner thoughts about changing my face as in plastic surgery. The plastic represents plastic surgery. It is supposed to represent future body modification and a contrast between happy times. As the plastic ruins the piece, the thought of changing my face ruins my happiness.
3)How did practice and revision guide your end product? 4) Describe your process when creating this work.
First I made a grid drawing so I could get the proportions right. Then I started painting some of the darkest and lightest areas as I gradually started adding more color. I should have stuck to one picture but it turned out fine. I ended up redoing the hair and eyebrows because I was not satisfied with it. I think I did well when painting the shadows on my face but I think I could have made the lips and nose more detailed/proportional. I also think I could have added more shadows to the jacket. For the background I used a palette knife to apply it to create some texture. I learned how to mix colors and apply them. I learned how to paint teeth better.
